Momentum is what helps us move forward when we get stuck. Think of someone who is thriving in their career. You might describe them as being on the move, having an idea or a plan for where they are headed, having a reliable network, and having a backup plan if their plan a doesn’t go as expected.

5 key elements

These characteristics describe five key elements in maintaining momentum.

Characteristic 1, Getting into motion: Figuring out what you want to do-your carrier plan for now-and taking the first steps towards realizing it.

Characteristic 2, staying motivated: Being in tune with how you will benefit from achieving your plan/gold.

Characteristic 3, existing supports/allies: Finding and/or deciding what/who you need and asking for help.

Characteristic 4, making a commitment: Actually, telling someone what your career goal is, how you are going to achieve it and that you are going to do it.

Characteristic 5, always have a plan B: If obstacles make the first plan impossible, you know what the next step will be.
