Topic 1: What is meandering
Looking inward
″ Let your thoughts meander towards a sea of ideas. ″ Leo D. Miinnight
Exploring
Meandering asks us to be explorers. It invites us to explore our inner (building self-awareness) and outer (broadening horizons of the kind of learning and or work that could be possible) worlds. Meandering encourages us to wander and wonder. It’s about being curious and allowing ourselves and the multitude of possibilities available to us in the labour market.
″ Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom. ″ Aristotle
Looking inward
The first meandering component is looking inwards. This means getting to know ourselves. What skills we have, what interests us, how our personality shapes us, and our motivations. Knowing yourself is the essential first step in the career development process because we need to know who we are to find meaning in what we do.
Knowing yourself
In the labour market that is characterized by rapid career changes and uncertainty, knowing yourself becomes a superpower because when you know who you are, you can explore work that reflects what brings you joy. It increases the chances of getting that work because employers can see the fit between you and what you offer their business.
Looking outward
Looking outward in terms of meandering is about being aware of and being open to opportunity. It’s about being curious about talking to people about what they do, building networks and asking questions like: ″ How does one work for LEGO? ″ ″ What does it take to become an entrepreneur? ″ ″ Hoe does a video game get made, and what are the jobs involved in making it? ″ ″ What jobs do my neighbours do ?″
