Topic 1: What is meaning

Why do we work?

Imagine that you are a journalist, and you were given the assignment of finding out about the appeal of book clubs. During an interview with the local book club you ask members, why do you like to read? Your surprised by the variety of answers. One member says that they loved the Solitude and quiet; and other says that they love how it captures their imagination, while another say that they love reading because they want to share what they have read without the others.

The reasons why

The reasons and responses to the question why changes based on the engine individual. Similarly, the question of why we work elicits different responses. We all get something out of working- it may be financial compensation- but it also may be a sense of identity, social connection, challenges, self-worth, power, a feeling of contribution, being valued and feeling like we’re part of the community. The list could go on.

Your three reasons

Narrow it down

Now, try to narrow it down. If you had to give up one, which one it be? Drag and drop the reason you could give up onto the hot air balloon.

Our WHY as motivation

How is he or difficult was this for you?

Our whys when it comes to work are critically important drivers, motivators, inspiration and anchors.  Few, if any of us, fulfill all our whys through paid work. Our whys can be fulfilled in other parts of our lives. But the more we can find work that align with our whys, the more likely we are to be motivated to persevere succeed and grow in our careers.
