Course Description

Ethical practice is a core component of professional career development work. Career development professionals regularly encounter situations where values, responsibilities, and expectations intersect, requiring thoughtful and ethically sound judgment. This course introduces career development professionals to ethics in practice within the Canadian context. You will explore the interrelated concepts of values, morals, and ethics and examine ethical dilemmas and ethical decision-making, with a focus on applying Canada’s Code of Ethics for Career Development Professionals. The course also covers professional boundaries, consultation, and strategies for ongoing ethical development, giving you the tools to navigate complex situations with confidence and integrity.

At the end of this course, you will:

  • Explain the importance of ethics in career development practice and recognize the complexity of ethical dilemmas
  • Describe the relationship between values, morals, and professional ethics and identify potential biases that may influence your decisions
  • Identify common career development ethical issues related to professional competence, client relationships, and professional interactions 
  • Apply the Code of Ethics for Career Development Professionals and use an ethical decision-making model to guide practice
